What is Laser Resurfacing?
Laser resurfacing, also called a laser peel, is a treatment used to resurface damaged skin to produce a more even skin tone. This treatment is very effective for fine lines around the eyes, marionette lines or other lines around the mouth, facial scars due to an accident or injury, acne scars, age spots, and areas of sun damage.
Removing the top layers of skin provides a “deep clean” effect, allowing the skin to naturally rejuvenate itself. As the skin heals and regenerates, it appears younger with a more even texture and tone.
Benefits of Laser Resurfacing
After your treatment, you will see some immediate results with continued progress over several weeks as the skin naturally rejuvenates. The tone and texture of your skin will improve, giving you a fresher, younger appearance. Many patients report feeling more confident after the treatment. Laser resurfacing treatment produces permanent results. However, the aging process will continue naturally over time.
Is Laser Resurfacing Right for Me?
Men and women are good candidates for laser resurfacing, particularly those with lighter or fair skin tones. The treatment is most effective on healthy skin that is not oily.
Laser resurfacing may not be right for patients who have darker skin tones, including olive, brown or black skin. It may not be appropriate for patients with an active skin infection or who are prone to abnormal, keloid-like scarring. If you have taken Accutane® in the past 18 months, you may not be a candidate for laser resurfacing.

What Is a Laser Resurfacing Procedure?
A beam of energy is used to carefully and accurately remove the top layers of skin. During the treatment, the laser is passed back and forth over the skin until the surgeon reaches the safest level where the scar, pigmentation, or wrinkle is no longer visible. In some cases, the imperfection is deep in the skin layers. Dr. Flannagan may decide to perform the treatment in two stages to protect the integrity of the skin.
How Long Is the Recovery After a Laser Resurfacing Procedure?
The first 3 to 10 days your skin is recovering from the treatment. You will need to keep it covered with a bandage which should be changed regularly. Dr. Flannagan may decide to use an ointment that you can reapply at home. He will determine the best course for your needs. Complete recovery can take several weeks depending on the depth of the treatment.
You may need to adjust your skin care routine to care for your fresh skin. Be sure to keep your skin well protected from the sun, particularly for the first few weeks as it will be more sensitive. Some patients choose to have a follow-up treatment performed several years later.
How Much Does a Laser Resurfacing Procedure Cost?
The cost for your procedure will vary depending on the extent of the area being treated. Some patients may require two stages of treatment. This will also impact the cost of your treatment. In most cases, plastic surgery treatments are not covered by insurance. The staff at Flannagan Plastic Surgery will ensure all of your questions about the financing of your treatments are answered. Most of our patients use a combination of the following to pay for their procedures:
- Personal or cashier’s checks
- American Express
- CareCredit® Financing
