What is a Breast Reduction Procedure?

A breast reduction procedure is the opposite of an augmentation and is done to remove excess tissue and create a smaller bosom. Performed under general anesthesia, excess fat and tissue are removed to create breasts that are more proportionate to your frame. This eliminates excess pressure on the neck, back, and shoulders to reduce pain and increase your range of motion.

Am I a Strong Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Dr. Flannagan can help determine if breast reduction is the right procedure for you by considering a number of factors. If you’re considering breast reduction, it’s likely you already have some considerations in mind. Strong candidates for breast reduction surgery typically experience one or more of the following:

  • Back pain from heavy breasts
  • Shoulder pain from heavy breasts
  • Posture problems
  • Chronic tenderness
  • Trouble exercising
  • Social anxiety regarding breast size
  • Rashes under breasts

Benefits of a Breast Reduction

For many women, a breast reduction isn’t a cosmetic surgery —it is actually a medical necessity. Those who have undergone this surgery remark that they notice a reduction in back or neck pain almost immediately. It can also make it easier for you to find lingerie or swimsuits that fit you properly and provide ample support and coverage.

Can I Breastfeed After Breast Reduction?

Depending on the type of reduction procedure chosen, you may be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction. Dr. Flannagan can better address your particular situation at a personal consultation.

What Can I Expect Following Breast Reduction?

It’s normal to need some time to take it easy and recover after the procedure. In most cases, breast reduction patients return to work in just a week or two following the surgery. We will provide you with detailed instructions to help you heal in maximum comfort and health at home. Most patients return to work within one to two weeks after breast reduction surgery.

In addition to these personal factors that you can speak with Dr. Flannagan about, he will take measurements to determine your candidacy. With your desired outcome and current circumstances in mind, Dr. Flannagan will recommend a breast reduction to those who qualify.

Types of Breast Reduction

Based on your candidacy, Dr. Flannagan can recommend one of the following:

  • Vertical Breast Reduction: This procedure uses a “lollipop” incision that involves an incision around the areola and down the center of the breast where it meets the rib cage. This is best when only a small amount of skin needs to be removed.
  • Wise Pattern Breast Reduction: To remove a large amount of skin, a wise pattern reduction is used, sometimes called an “anchor.” The incision goes around the areola, down the bottom of the breast and across the bottom fold of the breast.
  • Liposuction Breast Reduction: If a man or woman wants reduced breast size, but does not have a lot of excess skin or large breasts, liposuction can be used to reduce breast volume. This works especially well for male gynecomastia surgery.
