Are you considering breast augmentation? Start by discussing your desired outcome with your cosmetic surgeon because there are many different choices available to help you reach your goal. Here are some choices you will discuss with your doctor during your consultation:
Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants
All breast implants have the same basic anatomy – they are a rubbery silicone shell with filling. There are pros and cons to each type of breast implant, so your first decision will be deciding what type of filling works best for you. Of course, Dr. Flannagan can advise and help you make a decision.
Saline implants are filled with a saline solution (sterile salt water). If the implant shell should leak, the body will absorb the saline. Saline implants cost less than silicone implants. They have a uniform shape and firmness and are FDA approved for women 18 years of age and older.
Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel, which feels more natural to the touch. Should the implant shell leak, it will not collapse. The gel may remain inside the shell or it may escape. Silicone implants are FDA approved for women 22 years of age or older. With silicone implants you may need to schedule regular visits with your plastic surgeon to make sure they are functioning properly.
Size and Shape of the Breast Implant
The next step in your consultation is to decide the appropriate size and shape of the breast implant. Implants come in many different sizes, and you can choose from a round or teardrop shape. Your surgeon will help guide you through choosing the correct size and shape to achieve your desired look.
Placement of the Implants
There are three basic placement options for breast implants.
- Subglandular – implants are placed behind the breast tissue but in front of the chest muscles
- Partial submuscular – implants are placed behind the breast tissue and partially behind the muscles
- Complete submuscular – implant is placed fully behind the muscles
Your doctor will determine the best placement for your breast implants based on a number of factors including your lifestyle, the size of the implants, and the amount of natural breast tissue you have.
